The Position

The Board of Directors of Oakland Military Institute (OMI) invites applications for the position of Superintendent to begin service by July 1, 2014. The Superintendent is the Chief Executive Officer and reports directly to the Board of Directors. The Oakland Military Institute is an independent public Charter School with a college preparatory curriculum serving both middle school and high school students with a Corps of Cadets numbering more than 700 young men and women. OMI provides a fully accredited college preparatory curriculum at the high school level. The middle school is designed to prepare our younger cadets for the rigor of a college preparatory high school curriculum. OMI was founded by California Governor Jerry Brown in 2001 during his tenure as the Mayor of Oakland, CA. OMl's educational philosophy stresses the development of its cadets in the following four areas (pillars): academics, leadership, citizenship and athletics.

Candidates for the office of Superintendent must have an outstanding record of leadership and achievement, a Master's Degree, military background, and teaching or administrative experience at the high school level. Other factors important in a candidate's record include: Commitment to the values of a college education; sensitivity to the teaching process and to the importance of scholarship; and skill in the areas of finance, budgeting, fund-raising and human resource development. The successful candidate must be able to communicate Oakland Military Institute's mission both within and outside the Academy, and should possess the attributes of integrity, high energy/physical stamina, dedication, cultural sensitivity and creativity.

The successful candidate must possess the required California administrative certification and a military career that includes assignment at a command level. The Institute will offer a multi-year contract and a salary package that is competitive and negotiable to the successful candidate based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. The compensation package will include salary, health benefits, sick leave, vacation and expense reimbursement.

The School

The Oakland Military Institute is a charter school in the Longfellow neighborhood located on the site of the former Longfellow School which is the namesake of the Longfellow neighborhood.

The Oakland Military Institute was one of then Mayor and now California Governor Jerry Brown's important projects. Thanks to his fundraising and support for the school they spend between $10,000-$12,000 per pupil (compared to $6,000-$8,000 per pupil for most Oakland public schools & other Oakland charter schools. The OMI sends 90% of students to college with approximately 75% attending four-year institutes of higher learning.
