The Position

The Board of Trustees of the Mesa Union School District in Ventura County is seeking a superintendent with strong school district and community leadership skills who is committed to academic excellence for all students. The ideal candidate will be someone who has a history of excellent leadership with exceptional communications skills and who has the ability to work with the Board to maintain and expand the current vision and then enlist all segments of the District community in creating the future. A well balanced background of increasing leadership in employee relations, district business, curriculum and special education as well as building a positive collaborative and forward thinking culture. Experience with diverse communities and the ability to understand and effectively work with all segments of the diverse community is critical for the successful candidate. The successful candidate must be committed to the belief that along with the Board, they will collaboratively lead the District into an exceptional future. The Mesa Union School District is truly a unique school and community and is looking for a truly unique Superintendent/Principal to lead the school/district into the future.

The Mesa District

At Mesa, the teachers actively engage students in rigorous academic coursework that prepares students for the 21st century demands and to successfully meet the demands of the California State Standards. In an effort to provide students with the tools necessary for meeting 21st century challenges, every student is given the technology needed for individualized learning. This 1:1 technology allows every student to fully utilize the necessary technology in order to learn and demonstrate their skills and abilities.

Beyond the traditional academics, students are given the opportunity to explore their alternative interests and talents through art exhibits, performances, lectures, events, and optional classes including band, drama, music, dance, and visual arts. For middle school students, a series of elective courses that expand the core-curriculum in the areas of robotics, agriculture, oceanography, school yearbook, and journalism are offered.

Mesa students are able to participate in optional extracurricular activities that include volleyball, soccer and basketball. These teams are involved in a series of competitive programs with other Ventura County school teams.

Selection Criteria and Application Materials

The following criteria represent standards to be used in the evaluation of applicants and in the selection of the superintendent

  • Currently serving as superintendent, deputy superintendent, associate or assistant superintendent, director or principal.
  • Doctorate optional
  • Current driver’s license for state of residence
  • Current California Administrative Credential

All applicants must provide the following items by the closing date of April 6, 2020 not later than (5:00 PM) to be considered:

  • A completed Application Information Form. (Please complete as instructed; do not complete by stating “See attached resume”. The Application Information Form and brochure may be downloaded via Dave Long & Associates web page at DLAssoc.com
  • A personal letter of application stating reasons for interest in the Mesa Union School District superintendent position.
  • A resume providing biographical background information about educational preparation, experience and achievements.
  • A placement file and/or five (5) current letters of professional references describing the applicant’s performance in previously held positions.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to arrange to have all of the above items submitted online to the DLAssoc.com website not later than 5:00 PM, on April 6, 2020.

Selection Procedure

A professional screening committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant. The Board and the screening committee will use the described criteria during the screening, interviewing, and final decision-making process. After receiving and studying the report of the professional screeners, the Board will select and interview a select number of top candidates.

From the individuals interviewed, the Board will select a limited number of candidates for the final interviews and select a finalist. Any applicant who contacts a Board Member with the intent of influencing the Board’s decision will be disqualified. Travel expenses for those candidates selected for the initial interview will be the responsibility of the candidate.

Salary and Contract Terms

The Mesa Union District Board of Education will offer a competitive and negotiable salary, plus fringe benefits to the successful candidate, based on the individual’s experience and qualifications. The Board intends to offer a multi-year contract.

It is the candidate’s responsibility to provide the District with employment eligibility and verification of citizenship in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act.
